Answer these questions,
Consider the following questions. You don’t have to specifically address all of them. They are to prompt your thinking about what our society’s “ideal” family looks like. Remember that an “ideal” (what we believe should be) may not be the same as what really is.
Describe the culturally dominant “ideal family.” Note that I’m asking you to think about what is viewed as an “ideal family” by society, not your own personal ideals, which may be different:
What does this family look like? How many kids? How many adults?
What do the adults do (Inside the house? Outside the house? In social spaces outside the home?)
What do they wear? How would we describe their appearance?
Where do they live? What does their house look like?
What do they do on weekends? Do they go to church or synagogue or a mosque?
What do they do in the summer? in the evenings? What does a typical day look like?
What do they do with their money? with leisure time?
What do they want for their children? Is it the same for girl children and boy children?
What do they talk about? What don’t they talk about?
Then answer (ONE) of these
How does social class affect the parenting styles of the families discussed in Lareau’s study? How do families serve to maintain social class distinctions through their parenting? (Lareau)
How do economic inequalities in our society place additional burdens on working-class and poor families? What are some examples from Rubin’s reading?
How do some of the solutions developed by working-class and poor families to deal with economic difficulties (from Rubin’s reading) reinforce traditional gender roles? How do they help challenge these roles?
Based on your reading of Marriage and Family: LGBT Individuals and Same-Sex Couples, how might same-sex marriages challenge traditional notions of family in the United States? How might recognizing these families lead to greater equality for people of all sexual orientations?
You don’t have to specifically address all of them.
