Write a 4–5-page paper, excluding title and bibliography pages, responding to the prompt at your semester paper assignment link. Include at least four outside references (literature review) in addition to the material we have covered in class. Your literature review may include academic articles, official statistics/records, and educated opinion pieces in referred journals. This does not include Wikipedia, blogs, Facebook, Twitter, or any social networking website.
Include a thesis statement and analysis of the material. To analyze means breaking a topic or concept into parts to inspect and understand it. You will research those parts to present your general perspective and conclusion about the issue. Your overall perspective will become your synthesis of the material. Synthesis means restructuring the details of your analysis in a way that makes sense to you. In an analytical paper, you research to become an expert on a topic so that you can restructure and present the parts of the subject from your perspective. In other words, “What would you do?”
Finally, you will develop a personal conclusion about the topic. Do not use first person (I, we, us). Use third person (people, individuals, society, etc.). The conclusion is intended to help the reader understand why your synthesis should matter to them after reading the paper. A conclusion is not merely a summary of the main topics covered but also a synthesis of key points. In this case, keep the same elements delineated for your ethical dilemmas in mind as you explain to the reader the importance of your conclusion for future research/analysis.
Prompt:
Racial and ethnic minorities currently comprise about a third of the nation’s population and are expected to become a majority by 2050. These diverse communities have unique behavioral health needs and experience different rates of mental and/or substance use disorders and treatment access. Communities of color tend to experience a greater burden of mental and substance use disorders, often due to poorer access to care; inappropriate care; and higher social, environmental, and economic risk factors.
Crime is a public health issue. It shares common causes with ill health, particularly poverty, and fear of violent crime is itself a significant cause of anxiety.
What is the ethical approach to addressing mental health and behavioral health as it relates to fear and victimization of crime? Is it ethical for persons known to be dangerous to themselves or others to be free to continue aggressive or violent behavior because of their mental health? How does one weigh the rights of individuals in light of mens rea and mental health with the right of society to be safe?
