indicating
1) your opinion on the the retributivist’s perspective that we are obliged as a society to kill certain people, even if we may have to sacrifice some innocent people along the way;
2) your opinion on the abolitionist’s perspective that the existence of the death penalty in the United States sets a tone for punitive punishments imposed by the criminal justice system, even though sentences have not always been so harsh in the United States; and
3) provide your overall opinion on the death penalty, arguing the points of those who oppose your beliefs (e.g., if you’re an abolitionist, argue against “eye for an eye,” deterrent, cost, etc.; if you’re a supporter, argue against concerns for wrongful conviction, arbitrary imposition, not a deterrent, etc.).
