A documentary film literally documents a topic. In that sense, it is like nonfiction. This genre of film may have a more difficult time finding an audience (and funding), but documentaries are increasingly popular. The length of a documentary may vary from a few minutes to time generally allotted to feature films.
With increasing attention to food production, environmental awareness, and healthy living, films about agriculture are in the ascendency. Food, Inc. (2008) exposes corporate farming as unhealthy for all concerned; it was a finalist for an Academy Award. Super Size Me (2004) traces an individual for 30 days who eats only at a fast food restaurant, gaining almost 25 pounds. King Corn (2007) details the odyssey of two college friends who move to Iowa to grow an acre of corn, revealing in the process the extent of industrialization in farming and pervasiveness of corn, not only as food, but as fuel. The Real Dirt on Farmer John (2005) explores how one farmer turns unconventional. Troublesome Creek: A Midwestern features a farm in financial trouble, as does The Farmer’s Wife.
Watch one of the above mentioned films and write about how food and/or farms are depicted in the film. Analyze the camera angle, background, color, verbiage, tone, lighting, theme, etc.
