When Van Gogh painted his famous A Starry Night, he was in an insane asylum. He claimed that the inspiration for the work came to him one night while he looked out his window at a nighttime scene. His depression had suddenly
deepened and he despaired of ever recovering. Should his location and state of mind “color” our interpretation of the
work? After all, we are analyzing the work and not the man. Where do we draw a line? Can a line be drawn? Can you
ever really separate the “dancer from the dance?”
