Written Critique #2: The Paradox of Choice
Using the book, The Paradox of Choice, and what you learn in the Conjoint Analysis session in class (late October or early November), deeply analyze a high stakes choice you’ve taken and another low stakes choice you’ve taken.
The choices can be about either a product, a service, or a life decision (e.g., like choosing a college). Be very honest about it, be deep about it, and be willing for it to be shared with the class.
The 2 choices you write about should be ones where you can leverage and illustrate the concepts in The Paradox of Choice and the Conjoint Analysis session of class. Pick choices that you had to think about and deliberate (for both high and low stakes decisions), not choices that were easy or no-brainers for you. You need reference from the book
Consider the following questions for your answer:
What was your initial thinking/predisposition, how did it evolve over time?
What was the sequence of questions/decisions that you worked through to get to a final decision/choice?
What was your decision tree?
Discuss your emotions and thinking over the course of the decision-making.
What were your main considerations?
What did the alternatives have to offer?
What were the tradeoffs among all your options?
What was your range of your options?
What external factors influenced you? People? Ads? Literature? Etc…
What was at stake in this decision/choice? How much time/effort did you put into it?
What could be the consequences?
What did you NOT consider in making your choice that others might have expected you to factor in?
What considerations did you factor in that others might consider trivial or non-issues?
How did your choice play out? How satisfied are you with your choice?
Would you make the same choice again? In retrospect, what would you have done differently?
Minimum 5 pages, Maximum 10 pages. Times New Roman, double-spaced, font 12. Formatting, grammar, and spelling are all important.
What was at stake in this decision/choice?
