Students will write a term paper entitled “Controversies Involving Free Speech,” that is between 1,000
and 1,500 words long (approximately 5 pages, double spaced). All of the information necessary to
complete the term paper is in the assigned reading, “Free Speech on Campus,” which is posted on the
class D2L CONTENT TERM PAPER section. For the term paper, students may not consult or use any
other resources (webpages, other articles, etc.). In their term papers, students will accurately relate the
information about the questions asked. These are not opinion essays; they are factual reports.
Assigned reading posted on D2L, Content, Term Paper: Price, Tom. “Free Speech on Campus.” CQ
Researcher, May 20, 2022, 1-31.
In your term paper you will address the following three topics.
1. In the first section, concentrate on the issue of book banning for elementary and high schools
(i.e., K – 12 education) over the past 20 years. What are the types of books that raise the most
concerns, and why do these books raise concerns? Who is in favor of banning books, and what
are their reasons for doing so? Who is opposed to banning books, and what are their reasons
for doing so? What have been the consequences for teachers and librarians?
2. In the second section, concentrate on issues that pertain to colleges over the past 20 years, such
as controversies over invited speakers, faculty teaching and classroom discussions. What are
the arguments for limiting speech on college campus, and who supports these restrictions?
What are the arguments for not limiting speech on college campus, and who opposes speech
restrictions? What are some of the tactics used by supporters and critics of free speech?
3. In the third section, discuss the “players” in the controversies over free speech in the past 20
years. What has been the role of parents and community members? What has been the role of
various levels of government and various branches of the government? What role have
educational administrators played in these controversies. What are students’ concerns, and
what actions have they taken?

The remaining 15 points are awarded based on grammar. This includes coherent paragraphs (writing an
outline first can help with this), coherent and grammatically correct forms of sentences, spelling, and
punctuation. Write everything in your own words to demonstrate your ability to communicate
effectively. Thus, no quotations are allowed in the term paper. You must write everything entirely in
your own words.
The D2L TurnItIn check is used with the Assignment box to verify that students are writing entirely in
their own words. Penalties will be applied to term papers that are not written in the student’s own
words. This may include a score of 0 for the term paper and a report filed with the Dean of Students.
