You will be expected to identify the central argument being made in the article and to engage in a critical manner i.e. evaluate the intellectual approach and the evidence-base of the argument, and set out areas where you agree and disagree with the author. The objective of this assessment is to grade your ability to critically engage with a piece of academic writing and to present an objective evaluation of its strengths and weaknesses. In other words, you are not being invited to simply set out what you think but to engage with another scholar’s ideas. To get a good note, please address the following.
Have a basic structure to your review. Include an introduction, state the core argument of the article or summarize it briefly and also include a short conclusion that closes of your review. Draw connections between the article and the topic more generally. Link the content of the reading back to the topic and show your awareness of the topic discussed here in the world overall and show that you developed some critical understanding during the class discussion (for example in judging whether the author makes a credibly point).
Instead of just summarizing these, you should explain. Do more than just summarizing the article and listing strengths and weaknesses. Explain whythese are strengths and weaknesses and how the article succeeds or fails to make a good argument in turn. But focus on content, not so much form.
You must discuss the implications of the weaknesses you point out as well. Instead of focusing heavily on the rhetoric style of the piece, engage with the content more heavily. We are more interested in critical analysis of the content written, less so in critical analysis of the way in which it is written.
