Theoretical Lens Interpretation – Minimum 1600 Words
Other than close reading, the other major way to write about literature is to read a text through an interpretive or theoretical lens.
Essays like this try to go beyond close reading to see how certain
philosophies or theories bring new insight into the text. For this writing assignment, you will choose 2-3 texts and interpret them through a literary approach.
One text can be (but doesn’t have to be) one that has been assigned or that we have discussed.
The other two should be texts we have not read in this class or used in a sample essay in the book.
You will make your life easier if you choose texts that seem to have something in common that ties them together.
You may choose from these literary theories:
Feminist Criticism
Marxist Criticism
New Historicism
Psychological Criticism
You will also want to do some additional research for this project:
Further research on your chosen theory so that you feel comfortable with their concerns and philosophical orientations.
Other scholars’ interpretations of your text using your critical
theory. Your job in this essay is to find new insights into the text
that the other scholars have not considered.
For the first kind of research, you may use whatever search methods
you would like, as long as you think I would find it credible and valid.
For the second kind of research, do not use Google. Instead, use these databases to find more sources: https://guides.lib.udel.edu/englishamlit/databases (Links to an external site.).
These databases will be far more helpful for you than a simple Google
search. If you must use Google, use Google Scholar: https://scholar.google.com/ (Links to an external site.). This searches for sources that have been reviewed by experts and are of higher quality.

These are the instructions provided by the professor. This course is regarding literature analysis; if possible, I would like the three selected texts to be sonnets that share a central theme.
My ideal theme would be a discussion regarding love or death, but I trust your instincts if you have an alternate idea. I have attached the rubric as well for better guidance.
*** I would like to clarify that the “three texts” must be included in the assignment, not three pieces of text to cite as a source. The minimum citation count is ten, and the three texts are to be discussed throughout the essay.
