the task is to make a PowerPoint presentation for this topic, and write a script for the PowerPoint presentation which can produce a 10 minutes speech.
Your task is making a 10 min. oral presentation about your own speaker and listener intelligibility, focusing on the latter much more. (obs! You MUST keep the time limit. If you include a video/audio clip of a speaker other than you in the second part, that does not need to be included in the 10 min. time limit)
You need to create a PowerPoint presentation where you add your voice recording and sample speeches of the speaker you have chosen.
this source should be used; I have access to the book, you just need first to pick a speaker and then i can search for the pages where its related to the speaker so i can refer to.
The book, World Englishes (Links to an external site.) (2019), by Melchers, Shaw, Sundkvist (the pages where you can read the pronunciation features of the English variety that the chosen speaker speaks. e.g. Kenyan English, Indian English, Singapore English…)
You can also refer to any other sources that you have found, such as books, articles or web sources.
(Your phonetics presentation should comprise two parts)
In the first part of your presentation (as briefly as possible, no more than 3 min.), you will evaluate the speaker intelligibility of your own pronunciation, using the Lingua Franca Core (LFC) and the idea of ‘pausing between thought units’ as the criteria. Start with clearly defining LFC in your own words with your own examples, and then move to discussing how intelligible your pronunciation would be in international communication in view of the LFC as the criteria. If there are potential issues that could make you misunderstood by international listeners, discuss them. Be reminded for this first part of your presentation that ‘sounding like a native speaker’ and ‘being an intelligible speaker’ are two very different things.
In the second part (much more substantial than the first part), you will analyze and discuss your listener intelligibility for a speaker you have chosen. You can choose a person, who you respect/admire and thus you want to improve your listening comprehension (=listener intelligibility) for. (For example, the person chose the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Wangari Maathai and used her short storytelling to analyze my listener intelligibility for her, as they like her very much and thus wanted to understand her Kenyan English accent better. As they did, you can choose any English speaker, except for those from the UK, US, Australia and Canada, as their English accents are already well-known to you. Choose one who has a challenging accent and a speech sample by the person.
Present, and discuss the chosen speaker’s pronunciation features, which are intelligible/clear/good, as well as the features that you think are challenging for you. In addition, discuss whether analyzing your listener intelligibility for the speaker has helped you better understand her/him than before, focusing on listening strategies developed during self-training: what worked and what didn’t work; in what ways the training helped understand the speaker better; and how it has impacted them as listeners of diverse Global Englishes speakers. Remember that you’re NOT judging or critically evaluating the chosen speaker’s pronunciation but your listening ability for her/him.
