The reading that will be analyzed for this essay is the following:
Butler, Octavia. “Bloodchild.” Bloodchild and Other Stories, 2nd Ed. New York: Seven Stories
Press, 1996, 2005.
Write an essay of between 5-7 pages. Use of at least three peer-reviewed secondary sources is required. Your opinions, supported by the text, are an important first step. The research should be used to strengthen your claims about the work and its significance. The essay is due June 22, 3:10 pm.
A successful essay will have a clear thesis statement, pay close attention to the text, and will be written clearly and grammatically. Essays will be graded based on content (argument, textual evidence from primary and secondary sources, and analysis) and form (structure, grammar, and format). Please use MLA referencing and parenthetical citation style. You must include a list of Works Cited. Do not forget to ask yourself, “so what?” when forming your thesis. Why does what you are saying matter? To whom specifically? Why? If you cannot answer these questions, you are probably only at the stage of making interesting observations. Remember that a thesis must be debatable. You must take a position on the text and convince the reader of why your interpretation matters i.e. social and cultural impacts or implications, using scholarship to back up your claims. Be sure to review class slides and videos on writing a three-storey thesis. See Ray Bradbury lecture for a model and other resources on Canvas.
