The birth of the United States as a nation was an act of enormous protest with a lot of smaller protests, some of which are well-known like the Boston Tea Party and some of which were swallowed by the annals of history but whose impact resonated through the American Revolution. Protest, in this regard, is very American. And protest comes in many forms. For example, Thomas Paine’s 1776 pamphlet, “Common Sense” made an impassioned case for independence from Great Britain; in this respect, the act of writing this very public piece was an act of protest.
Your task in this first essay is to analyze the rhetoric of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail”.

Your essay should be 3-4 pages. That’s no less than Three. Full. Pages. You will likely go onto the fourth.
MLA format, typed, doubled-spaced, 1” margins, 12-point type, Times New Roman, creative title, third person POV only (ask questions about this before you turn it in, if you have them, but essentially you should have no I, me, my, we, us, our, you, your, etc.)
You should have an introduction with a thesis statement that makes a clear statement about the rhetoric of King’s text, body paragraphs that support your thesis, and a conclusion.
You should use at least three direct quotations and more as needed to support your thesis. These should have proper in-text citations when quoting or paraphrasing.
As a rhetorical analysis, you should make consistent, clear references to specific rhetorical devices. You should also mention at least one appeal. Use the terms from your handout.
A Works Cited List is not required for this assignment.
