Students are provided a list of survival supplies (see below); each student will select up to FIVE (5) items from
the list that he/she believes provides the best opportunity for sustained survival in an Alone type of
situation/scenario. Please note, while the latest format of the show allows for contestants to select ten
items, this assignment limits you to only FIVE (5). Each student will deliver a speech informing the audience
which five items provide the best opportunity for sustained survival (in the student’s opinion and based on
research). The speech body will be organized into five main points, with the main point stating the selected
item, the sub-points stating why (benefit of that item), and the support statements providing cited
data/evidence supporting the corresponding sub-point. When organizing your outline, the chosen item is the
main point, your arguments (‘why’) are the 2-5 sub-points, and each sub-point has 2-5 cited support
statements (evidence) that confirm/verify your sub-point arguments as to why each of the five items you
chose should be considered the ‘best’ items for sustained survivability. Information about any of the seasons’
locations, seasonal conditions, etc. will serve to provide additional context and considerations for the
assignment scenario. While students are encouraged to use the latest season’s location for context, any
previous season’s location may be chosen by the student in selecting the five items and developing this
speech.
This assignment is designed for students to have fun, so have fun! There are no absolute right or wrong items,
just stronger or weaker arguments to justify those decisions. When posting ‘topic approval’ you will simply
choose the “Alone scenario” for your speech, then choose the five items that you think prove the best chance
for your survival. Consider your choices carefully – you cannot change your items from topic approval to
speech. Discrepancies of items in the final speech from those in one’s topic approval will be penalized at a
rate of -20% of the speech grade assignment per item change!
There are certain delivery requirements that must be met with this speech to avoid grading penalties
including • 5 minutes in length
• 5+ quality sources required (in-text citations in the outline and orally cited-incorporated into the speech
when referencing the material, such as in the body of the speech)
• Notes allowed – speaker’s discretion, as long as 4×6 or smaller, no full sheets of paper (NO READING,
NO MANUSCRIPT/ESSAY ALLOWED) or penalty enforced.
