Research Application Report
You have been incrementally building your Research Application Report. Your final report will be in the form of a memo to the community organization who has asked you to conduct a literature review and make recommendations for the problem you have studied. The purpose of this memo and the associated attachment is to provide you with the necessary information to write such a memo. Because many of you may be new to writing memos, I am creating this memo to not only explain the assignment but to also provide you with an example of a memo. In this memo, I review the audience and purpose of a memo, its central components,
and its format as it relates to this assignment. Audience and purpose
The purpose of the memo is to introduce the community organization to the problem under study and the research question, synthesize what is empirically known in terms of answers to that research questions, and offer recommendations for how the community might use the research to address the problem in their community. Central components
For the purpose of this assignment, there are six key memo components – heading, introduction, problem statement, literature review, recommendations, and reference list. The heading in this memo serves as an example of how to construct it in your memo. Make the
subject line as specific as possible. You can make up a name for the community organization and/or leader who asked you to conduct this project. The heading is approximately 1/8 of the entire memo.
The introduction is just a few sentences to orient the reader to what you were asked to do and what the memo includes. An example first sentence of this introduction may be something like “You asked me to prepare a report about how we can address the [e.g., impact of parental incarceration on children] in our community. This memo…..” You do not need a header for this introduction. The problem statement is the one you are currently editing. It should be approximately 1- ½ pages and end with the research question (written as a question). Be sure to use in-test APA citations for any research findings you use or assertions you make. Use a “Problem Statement” header. The literature review summarizes and synthesizes the findings from the 6-10 empirical articles that answer your research question. Be sure to use in-text APA citations for each article and summarize all material in your own words. Use a “Literature Review” header. This section will be 3-4 pages long, depending on how you synthesize the material. The recommendations section discusses recommendations, based on the research that grow out empirical findings from the literature review. You will make at least three (3) recommendations. This section will be 1-1 ½ pages long. Use a “Recommendations” header.
The reference list will be attached as an attachment, serving as the last page of the memo. You will note it as an attachment as shown below. The reference list will start on a new page and use APA 7th formatting and include all resources cited in the report. Format
For the purposes of this assignment, the memo will be approximately 5-7 pages long and follow these guidelines:
11 or 12 pt font with a serif (e.g., Times New Roman or Book Antiqua)
1-inch margins, double-spaced, with page numbers
Pages are stapled together (no paperclips)
APA 7th edition formatting of in-text citations and reference list (no running header)
All material will be summarized in your own words (NO QUOTES)
Proofread and use Word’s spell check
