Option 2: Research government regulations on a particular area of your choice, such as food, drugs, product safety, fracking, environment, etc. Do you think the government regulations go too far? Do you think the government needs to add more regulations? How are lobbyists involved concerning regulations on food and drug safety, and our environment concerning fracking? Explain your answers.
Be sure to make connections between your ideas and conclusions and the research, concepts, terms, and theory we are discussing this week.
Government regulations are implemented based on a process of collaboration between Congress and the Executive branch (the President). An area of concern or opportunity is identified and regulations are implemented to address them. Oftentimes the regulations are added to the overall responsibility and oversight under a federal agency (think CDC, FDA, USDA, etc.). Other times a set of regulations may be so comprehensive or cover so many new areas that a new federal agency is established (think Consumer Financial Protection Bureau).
The U.S. has done a remarkable job with addressing areas regarding consumer and product safety standards, environment issues, financial issues, and other areas. Recently, the FDA completed an “emergency review” of vaccines to tackle COVID. You may recall in 2020 when the President stated that a vaccine would be available for every American by mid-April 2021. At the time it was not conceivable that such a milestone could be achieved; the current President re-affirmed this by noting vaccines are now available for every American on this date. There are other examples of positive developments and actions undertaken by federal agencies. Let’s flip this script and talk about where agencies have “dropped the ball.” Currently fracking is a hot topic, but why? Similarly, why is there federal opposition to the Keystone pipeline? When reviewing different agencies, think of pros and cons when you research whether you think the government regulations go too far? Do you think the government needs to add more regulations?
Based on objective research and data, what are your thoughts? f you could “tweak” an agency or a program, which would you revise, how, and why? Remember, this is a political science class, not a political opinion class, so be sure to use research, data and objective analysis to arrive at your conclusions.
