On your own, do some light background research on the composer of the piece that you select. In combination with what you’ve learned in this course and with your personal research, write an informal review of the piece with your own personal reflection on how this piece relates to trend(s) in contemporary music since 1989. Trust your own aural perception of the work to guide your analysis (i.e., don’t be afraid to create your own subjective interpretation of the piece).
Your project must include:
1. General background on the composer and piece [5 points]
2. Description of what you hear in the piece (describe the sounds of the instruments, melodies/patterns/organization of sound/texture/etc.) [5 points]
3. Explanation of how this piece relates to a trend or trends within contemporary music since 1989 with at least one reference to a point made in a required reading text. [5 points] *
4. Reflection on your personal interpretation of both the piece and performance. What do you think this piece is saying to you? How do you feel about the musicians’ performance? What did they bring to the interpretation of this piece and how did their performance influence your perception of the music? (This part is subjective, and your opportunity to be creative in your analysis!) [5 points]
