Discussion: Salaries in IT
When you looked at the information on salaries/compensation, what did you find that interested you? Were they what you expected? Were there significant differences in the compensation information on different sites? Was there a site you found particularly informative?
Burgan’s post:
When looking at the core compensation of Server administrator on salary.com I found interesting the value of benefits such as Healthcare, 401K and how much the total compensation adds up to. The base salary of Server admin is $103.639 with a bonus of $6,562 and the total compensation is $153,330. These median ranges are about the same that i expected. This gives an individual a range at which they should feel comfortable to negotiate with a potential employer. One should definitely take into account his experience and the level of skills in the field. This should allow an individual to target the higher end of the range, if one is highly experienced. What i personally noticed is that in many IT jobs, experience and certifications in the narrow field and the know how to counts significantly to the point that the bachelors’ degree can be waived. I found salaries on US Bureau of Labor Statistics website to be lower than expected. It could be that the website is biased in favor of the employers, and thus it keeps the salaries in the lower ranges. Overall, these websites such as salary.com and glassdoor.com allow both the employer and the employee to get a realistic idea of what one should expect when looking to hire someone or getting hired.
Sameer’s post:
I checked few of the website for the job of software developer entry level where i find out that the salary were different than other even for the same location thought it was not very much difference. Also one thing I did not like about is the experience for the same job was the 3 -4 years in a websites. I was expecting that for the website that show slight few base salary doesn’t require the high years of experience but it were the same for all. I understand these companies are the paying the compensation for the skills we have but at the same time these companies has also understand that in these competitive market it is slight difficult to find anyone with such many years of experience. Among the all site, I liked the Glassdoor because it was user friendly and eye catching. Another thing that you can compare different companies around the area that are paying more compensation.
