Search online for either a print ad, TV commercial, or government-sponsored poster (ex. propaganda, promoting a government service/facility, etc.) that you find interesting enough to write a rhetorical analysis on. Your selection must be accessible online, as you will be including a link to it on the essay’s References page. You’ll also need to include incorporate an image from it in your essay, so if you select a video, simply pause it as certain points to take a few screen shots that illustrate any specific aspects you are discussing.
Your rhetorical analysis should explain–in detail–at least 3 strategies that work towards selling the product/service in the advertisement, and this explanation should describe how any strategies you articulate are specific types of rhetorical appeals (to ethos, logos, pathos, or kairos). As you are looking for the strategies used, remember to consider how things like images, colors and sounds are used along any explicitly worded messages. In addition to explaining the strategies used and how they work, you should also make a judgment about which are more successful and explain why.
Your project should include any relevant background context for your chosen rhetorical situation. For example, if you select a propaganda poster to analyze, you may need to do a little research to better understand and explain to your reader why that poster was created for that time in history. The same goes for a print ad or commercial–what cultural values of its time does it reflect? Note that any outside information you use in your audience analysis must be appropriately integrated and documented according to either MLA or APA guidelines.
Your project should include a primary insight/point that makes a judgment about how successful the strategies are overall in working to achieve the purpose in your chosen piece.
