INSTRUCTIONS
While the crossing of racial and cultural boundaries with music had occurred before the 1960s,
Motown Records founder Berry Gordy was the first record producer and executive to market
Black musicians specifically to non-Black audiences.
In at least 750 words, you will discuss Gordy’s efforts to capitalize on the powerful consumer
demographic that was White teenagers. Provide specific examples of Gordy’s artist management
methods, his motivations, music production processes (i.e., how he accomplished the Motown
sound that attracted his target audience). Include an introduction (200 word-max) with a thesis
statement, body (350 word-min), and conclusion (200 word-max), with word counts at the end of
each section.

o You must provide links in proper Turabian Style citation to any songs or albums you
discuss. These must be YouTube or Spotify (not Apple Music). These do not count
toward your four minimum sources. URLs or links alone will be marked as missing.
