The Matrix – Quadratic Population Project
Project Goal: Gather real data that can be arranged into order pairs. Write the quadratic model (equation) for your data.
Steps

Retrieve Population Data again from the following Source: Population Website to Get Data. Once in there, click on the state of Arkansas. Then, once on the page for the state of Arkansas, scroll to the bottom to find the population figures.

Record the Arkansas population from 1990, 2000, and 2010. Write these as ordered pairs: Let x = the years after 1990 (yes, you must subtract to get the new scale) and y = population in millions (to scale this, divide their number by 1,000,000). Please list the 3 scaled ordered pairs for credit on this part.

Assuming the growth is quadratic, write a system of three quadratic equations in standard form () using your three points. Make sure to also state what the variables (x and y) represent. (Note: This comes from your values that you selected above. Note: You will have a, b, and c left in each of the 3 equations. You will use your x & y to plug in as the coefficients.)

Solve the system using an augmented matrix for a, b, and c. Show selected steps. Write the quadratic model equation that you will use to make predictions for 2020.

Predict the population in 2020. (Yes, you will still use the converted scale to find these values.)…then, translate your answer into a sentence using the original scale on the numbers.
