List of characters:

Emerson (1803-1882) is a contemporary of Poe.
And while Emerson is the founder of
Transcendentalism; as well as a Romantic writer, Poe is known for his Gothic and Dark Romantic writings.
Emerson’s essay, Experience is also dealing with the topic of a blind spot
that plagues human daily existence.
For Poe in his essay, Imp of the Perverse, the blind spot is the failure of the individual, scientific and scholarly community to conceive state of minds that act upon self- inflicting
thoughts.
While Emerson views the blind spot as a personal failure of perception in the series of successions, un-sequential, subjective, and incalculable daily experiences.
Nevertheless, both Poe and Emerson suggest that people live in a self-defeating state.
Both believe that this blind spot does more of a disservice than good for the individual and the society.
Writing Prompt 1:
In one paragraph show how one of Emerson’s characters
defeat the self in daily experiences and the consequences defeat has on the individual and/or group.
Examples:
Lords of Life:
Mood,
Succession,
Change,
Perspective,
etc.
List of Characters:
The farmer,
The neighbor,
The intellectual,
The Politician,
The Reader,
Emerson, himself
etc.
Writing Prompt 2:
Choose one character AND focus on that one paragraph highlighting
that one character; AND focus on how Emerson’s so-called, Lords of Life defeats that
character’s life in that one paragraph.
State your opinion/thesis in the 1st line of the
paragraph.
Then use the rest of the paragraph to show how the character (for example,
the farmer, Emerson, neighbor, or etc.) is thwarted by the Lords of Life (for example, mood, succession, focus point, subjectivity, un-sequential, incalculable conditions).
A paragraph
should not be more than 1/2 a page.
In addition, You can listen to Emerson’s essay,
Experience on Youtube. (I suggest you read along at least two times while listening; in
order to really appreciate the circular structure that reinforces this blind spot.)
In other
words, both in Poe and Emerson, the reader is affected by the condition of a blind spot.
Hence the necessity to re-read.
