Let’s put your skills to action. Write a short-short story (300-500 words) using the elements of fiction. The story must have a discerning beginning, middle, and end; there must be a plot arc.
Creativity does not mean playing fast and loose with the conventions for correct language use! Some famous writers indeed violated these expectations, but in this class, you must follow the rules. Later in your writing career, you can try breaking them, but be warned: it’s not always successful! If you are writing prose, do what you like; write wild!
A short-short story has to make every word count. So here’s some advice on how to say a lot in just a few words.
Write your story, and do not worry about the word count.
Put the story away.
Bring your story out and cut unnecessary words, then put it away again.
Read your story with the new revisions and seek words to omit for the final time.
After you let your second revision breathe, write your final draft.
When you think you have done something wrong, you more than likely have done something right. So do not second guess yourself!
