Emerging and Best Practices in Treating Individuals with Severe and Persistent Mental Illness
Last week, you read about evidence-based practices/interventions for the recovery of mental illness. EBPs are favored in the recovery-oriented treatment of mental illness because they combine well-researched interventions with clinical experience, ethics, client preferences, and culture to guide and inform the delivery of treatment and services. EBPs use more rigorous criteria typically requiring demonstration of effectiveness through randomized controlled trials or clinical replication series, effective experiential design, and independent replications (Ordway, McMahon, De Las Heras Kuhn, & Suchman, 2018). However, there remains debate regarding EBP among social workers who are not always in agreement regarding the best treatment or how to weigh the factors that contribute to good outcomes. Social workers indicate a broad range of general and specialized service delivery frameworks, models, and intervention strategies of potential relevant to mental health services. Some social workers remain reluctant about changing their practice on the basis of research evidence, and their skepticism is fueled by the methodological challenges and problems related to mental health research. For example, the research literature provides some assistance regarding evidence-based treatment frameworks; however, social workers cite limited guidance on optimal delivery systems for mental health services, so treatment becomes trial and error.
To accommodate these differences, social workers must be provided with a wide range of treatment options, some supported by evidence as described in Week 4, and by others representing emerging approaches or best practices for the construction of the best plan for the client. This week, you will explore emerging or promising interventions for helping individuals with mental illness to recover. These interventions do not yet have enough evidence to be empirical practices, but they are new or developing areas of interest, and each may quite possibly be under study at this current time. For example, the U.S. military has started initiatives to examine mobile mental health technology to enhance mental health care. Communication preference among service members receiving mental health care indicates that they favor provider communication using their mobile phone and text messages (Stanfill, Kinn, & Bush, 2014). Likewise, the Veterans Health Administration reports significant interest in using mobile technology to supplement mental health care and improve communication with providers (Miner, Kuhn, Hoffman, Owen, Ruzek, & Talyor, 2016).
This week, you will also review best practices to assist individuals with severe mental illness—as without these interventions, some clients may be prevented from achieving a high quality of life within their communities.
