A. RESEARCH QUESTION
How has Turkish democracy changed after the 2011 Turkish parliamentary elections to the 2017 Turkish constitutional referendum in terms of political system transition from a 95-year-old parliamentary system to a highly authoritarian presidential system?
B. JUSTIFICATION
Following the 2011 general elections, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was then prime minister, has consolidated his power considerably. Erdogan’s party achieved a very high success, getting 50% of the total vote. The courage of this high voting rate and popular approval was caused by the authoritarian orientations it brought with it. In 2013, a huge wave of protests broke out in the country. Starting as an objection to the municipal decision on the Gezi Park in Istanbul but after all turn into a series of high-opposition protests in Turkey, Erdogan’s ruling was a milestone in the journey. Erdogan, who also strongly suppressed these opposition protests, successfully came out of this difficult process. By the year 2015; In the process that started with the election defeat of the AK Party’s Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and the renewal of the election and ended with the resignation of Ahmet Davutoglu, Erdogan once again came out strongly. Elected president in 2014 within the framework of the parliamentary system, Erdogan made propaganda for the transition to the presidential system, claiming that the system was inadequate and that it was not possible to make quick decisions. In 2017, as a result of the referendum, the Turkish people left their 95 years of parliamentary experience aside and switched to a centralized presidential system. In 2018, with the completion of his first term, Erdogan was elected president by winning the first presidential election of the new system. And as a result, by 2011 witnessed an autocratic management Turkey is rising steadily toward that day.

General comments
Overall, the topic is of great interest and fits into a well-known debate in political science. You argue that the change from parliamentarian to presidential system contributed to autocratization / democratic decline in Turkey.
– Concepts: You define the presidential system as if it would be autocratic. That is not the case. There are checks and balances in a democratic presidential system. What are the criteria you apply to measure the influence of the establishment of the presidential system on the political regime / autocratization? First of all, you need to distinguish the government system (presidential versus parliamentarian; main differences refer to the relationship between executive and legislative) and the political regime (democracy and autocracy). Second, you need to define the criteria for „democratic decline“. How do you observe this? Third, you can analyze the influence of Erdogan’s monopolozation of power (facilitated by the presidential system) on democracy.
– Comparison: To be able to compare over time, you need to use the same criteria for each phase / critical juncture you look at. It might be helpful to read the section on „Critical junctures“ as a method to compare within countries in the attached article. You will find additional literature on critical junctures in the reference list of that article.
– Indices: You indicate that you provide data that shows democratic decline in Turkey but I cannot find this (only three lines in the end). It would be good to have that right in the beginning to support your argument that there is such a decline. V-Dem provides very good online-tools to generate graphs.
