In this assignment you will form a strong argumentative opinion on any topic you choose that is related to the class theme. You will convince the reader that your political, sociological, or scientific point of view is true. You will express your point of view in a clear and concise thesis statement, and you will support your thesis with convincing evidence. Your thesis should be more than a simple statement of fact, it should be something against which someone could easily form a counter argument. Your thesis should also express a belief that you are personally invested in.
The body should contain convincing scholarly support for your argument. You should choose interesting and useful scholarly and credible sources, and your data should be easily verifiable.

The paper should be structured something like this:
Introduction. Introduce your proposal clearly. I should be able to spot your thesis statement right away.
Support. Tell me why you believe what you do. Your evidence should be logically organized and easy to read. Your evidence must include scholarly studies, data, or primary information.

…and so on.
Refutation. In this section, you will anticipate a counterarguments against your claim. Is there anything that someone could say that would damage your thesis? Do they have a point? (In which case it might be a good idea to adjust your argument). Tell me where these counterarguments go wrong in light of your proposition.
Conclusion. Why are you invested in this problem? Why do you find this topic so interesting? If you’re writing on an important social problem, what can we as a reading community do about it?
