For this week’s essay, we are considering the idea of musical syncretism in relation to some of the musical genres we have looked at in this module.
Please answer each question with care and using approximately 5 complete sentences per answer if you want full credit.
Remember that I am evaluating your answers on how you show that you have thought carefully about the question and are writing with your own opinions, not something you found online.
Prompt you will be writing:
1. On our last page, we looked at musical cannibalism (basically taking things from foreign influences that you think are really great, but making them your own). Do you think this is actually possible? If so, how can musicians do this? Can you think of some examples either from our class or from your own listening? If you don’t think so, then explain why not and use some examples from our class or from your own listening.
2. Do you think the tropicália movement in Brazilian rock and roll (so basically taking ideas from groups like the Beatles but making them Brazilian) was successful? Use the two songs we listened to by Os Mutantes to prove your point either way. What can we hear in the music that proves that you are right in saying that they were or weren’t successful in this attempt?
3. When we looked at bossa nova and the sambas, we saw examples of musical syncretism (different genres of music from different cultures coming together to form new genres of music). What are the benefits and disadvantages of musical syncretism for preserving traditional music?
4. If you were a philosopher trying to help artists in your culture make music that truly reflects your culture and not someone else’s but still interacts with other cultures, what recommendations would you make and what catchy name would you give your ideas (like musical cannibalism but hopefully not so gross)?
