For this week’s assignment, please review the Herschel and Miori article “Ethics & Big Data” and try to answer the questions below based on the following scenario:
You are a member of a software development team employed by a start up company selling a small line of customizable personal tech products aimed at teenagers and young adults. This development team has been asked to set-up and test the company’s e-commerce channels. Specifically the team has been challenged by the company’s management to create “social media selling” opportunities for the products using various APIs to sell items on the Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, and Meta platforms in addition to the company’s web site. An advisor to the company wonders if this is the right time to break with using Facebook’s platforms, specifically Instagram and Meta as it will cost additional money to build those integrations and there is growing public outcry about Facebook/Meta’s decision making processes. Using the ethical framework(s) assigned to your group below discuss:
What concerns and whose concerns are prioritized for your framework?
What is your proposed action to take regarding the advisor’s comments?
What are the competing values that might need to be resolved to determine your company’s response?
Is there a clear “right” answer for what you and/or your team should do? Is the action justifiable?
