Essay: In 3-4 pages
(minimum 3 full pages), answer the following questions, providing supporting
evidence from the reading. In addition to the 3–4 pages of text, include a
bibliography.
1. Phillip Cary makes a
central claim in this chapter that demanding that a Christian be joyful all the
time is a terrible burden to place on the person. Do you agree with this claim that pressure to be joyful/happy is a
burden? Perhaps drawing on personal experience, do you think that pressure
is helpful or burdensome—or something else entirely? Evaluate Cary’s arguments
as you answer the question. For instance, he argues that the command in
scripture to “Rejoice always” refers to Christians as a group rather than
individually. Is that a good argument?
2. Cary describes hope in
this chapter as a kind of waiting, and suggests that hope (rather than lectures
on being joyful) is the answer to suffering. Is Cary’s understanding of hope helpful for one suffering affliction? How
does hope relate to Cary’s argument that we know the structure of God’s answer
to suffering, though not the content? That is, what does the happy ending of a
story have to do with hope?
A successful paper will
incorporate the three acts of the mind:
1.
Judgment (make a central
claim or thesis that you defend in the paper). Your paper must have a thesis. A thesis (judgment) is a
single sentence that makes an argument, such as, “The Green Bay Packers are the
best football team in the NFL.” In this case, your thesis should answer both questions. That is, something along the
lines that hope is a better solution to suffering than a demand to be happy, or
the other way around.
2.
Understanding (defining
terms). In
this case, key terms to define are “joy”
and “hope,” and perhaps other terms depending
on the argument you make.
3.
Reasoning (using evidence
and reason to support your judgment). Use evidence drawn from the reading to support
your claim.
Refer to the Document
“Critical Writing and Thinking” for help in thinking through the strength of
your arguments.
Cite the reading at least three times using Turabian,
footnotes and bibliography style. Follow the pattern of footnote below.[1]
Change the page number to match the page you are citing. Use the patterns from
previous paper to work out the bibliography
format on your own, or use a website like Zotero (which offers a free citation
tool) or https://www.citationmachine.net/
Your paper will be graded
based on the three acts of the mind as well as clean mechanics (correct
spelling and grammar, clear paragraph organization, proper footnotes and
bibliography, the polish of a finished draft rather than an initial rough
draft). See the rubric on Blackboard for details.
