ROMER (1993) IS THE ONLY SOURCE!!!
Descriptive Review of Romer
Description:
This review is to cover only the section entitled “Should Students Attend Class?”
beginning on page 170 and ending on page 173 in Romer (1993). Although, you should read the
entire paper, your description is only concerned with how Romer presents his research question,
data, methodology, and most importantly his findings as he attempts to answer: “…Should They?”
That is, should students go to class?
Your descriptive review should be approximately three pages long (double-spaced, with standard
margins) – I encourage you to cut and paste Table 2 from the paper and embed it in your write-up –
you can refer to any of its figures or numbers in the following manner: … – see Table 2. The table
does not count toward the page limit. include list of references. Please use end-of-sentence
citations, e.g., (Romer, p. xx) or (Guajarati and Porter, p. xx), if you use the textbook.
Save your essay as a Word document entitles (Your Last Name – Romer Essay).
Grading Rubric for Romer:
Identify Research Question :
This is obvious from the title of the paper and section, but it is important to clearly re-state it here.
Describe Romer’s Data:
What is the source (or briefly, how were the data collected? What are the number of observations
(N), etc.? What is the dependent variable and what are the explanatory variables?
Identify the Theoretical and Mathematical Models:
Does Romer present a theoretical model, in some form like the aggregate production Y = F(K,L)? Or
a mathematical model, as Y = AKαLα? Or is this an empirical study? Does this have implication for his
conclusion?
Summarize the Regression Methodology an Describe the Author’s Findings:
Note: This section is descriptive – I want you to see how the results of an OLS regression are
presented and used in the economics literature.
2
First, present the simple bivariate equation – this is the regression model (stochastic PRF) used for
the first column and then discuss the results in the column 1: the point estimates, the t-stats – you
should calculate this test statistic to ensure that it is correct – and note how he makes us of the
coefficient of determination. Focus on how Romer presents these results in the body of the paper
and describe how Romer uses the estimates to calculate average grades based on attendance. You
need to only mention the changes but not the specific results of columns 2 through column 4.
Present the regression model for column 5 and show how the author presents his results and then
interprets these final results. Does the author anywhere discuss the Gauss-Markov assumptions?
Should he?
Analysis of Romer’s Model Building:
Here explain why Romer includes additional variables – what is his purpose? The focus here
should be on seeing how Romer presents the rationale for the additional variables or creating the
model he estimates in column 4 and 5
Evaluate the Author’s Conclusion:
Do the author’s findings answer his research question? Do you agree with his conclusion in this
section? If so, why? Are there any extensions that you would recommend to the author?
Exposition :
All the elements that go into a well written essay: Is the essay well organized – is it internally
consistent? Are the sentences concise and to the point? Are economic and econometric terms used
appropriately and are words well chosen?
Does the author anywhere discuss the gauss-markov assumptions?
