This week’s discussion will address the first 2 components of Chapter 5 Public Opinion and Political Socialization.

#1 In a democratic system, is an elected official justified in acting against public opinion? If the official”s own experience and judgment dictate one course of action but the public, as measured by opinion polls, clearly prefers another, which should the elected official choose?
Should candidates/officials be driven by poll results or by their own beliefs?
#2 There are many agents of political socialization (see the Janda text). Which agent(s) were most important in shaping your political values? Do you feel your “political attitudes” are changing as you become older? Why/Why Not? Give examples to support your conclusions.
