Write a clear, concise essay of approximately 900 words on one of the following topics. Do not use the first-person pronoun. Make sure that your paper is based on texts from the Reading List and that it follows MLA format and avoid using the 2nd person pronoun as well. Please provide an MLA-style bibliography titled Works Cited and Consulted listing ALL the sources you consult. It is not necessary to consult any material outside your textbook, but if you choose to do so remember that it is essential to acknowledge all sources, and that UNACKNOWLEDGED BORROWING WILL BE CONSIDERED PLAGIARISM AND COULD RESULT IN FAILURE IN THE COURSE. Make sure that you pay attention to the requirements of composition: developing and stating a thesis, supporting all generalizations, maintaining paragraph unity, etc. Do not resort to plot summary and biographical information unless they are absolutely relevant to the topic you have selected. Please make sure that you follow the readings assigned, using versions from the assigned textbook for this paper (The Norton Anthology of English Literature).
You will be graded according to the Rubric for Literature Essays that was sent to you earlier: out of a total of 100 points, 20 points will be distributed among each of the following categories: Conceptual Framework (20), Details-Support (20), Independent/Critical Thinking-Analysis (20), Organization-Format (20), Vocabulary-Language Use (20).
Please be particularly careful about websites like Gradesaver and Litcharts, or sites that offer to write a paper for you. Last year I found extremely strange interpretations of Kipling’s “The Man Who Would be King,” in my students’ papers, claiming that Peachey was an example of a “moral” colonizer. Later I discovered this interpretation came from Litcharts!
Topic: Compare and contrast the role of the main narrators in Kipling’s The Man who Would be King and Conrad’s Marlow in Heart of Darkness. Focusing on the second set of narrators (Marlow and Peachey) rather than the first (the unnamed journalist and the unnamed seaman), compare and contrast the way in which they report the events that transpired. Consider their feelings about the dead character in each case (Dravot and Kurtz), particularly the ways in which they justify the dead character’s actions. Answer each and every one of the specifications in the topic.
Do not resort to plot summary and biographical information unless they are absolutely relevant to the topic you have selected.
