Consider the nature and characteristics of the hero in Greek myth.
Construct a list of criteria for what constitutes a hero and then measure a Greek hero against this list. They are then asked to argue whether the hero is deserving of his/her heroic status.
Guidelines
• Construct a list of characteristics and traits of a hero based on your own criteria (this list may
include elements of Joseph Campbell’s monomyth (separation, initiation, return), but should
not be limited to it). The criteria should be unique and able to be used to measure heroic
status.
• Choose a Greek hero from the heroic exploits course module (such as Perseus, Theseus,
Jason, Achilles, Oedipus or Agamemnon).
• Using the list of criteria, analyze the hero and his/her experiences. Explain whether the hero
is deserving of heroic status and provide justification for why/why not.
