Assignment

Site health and safety is a key component of construction and engineering projects. The consequence
of health and safety failing can be large for both individuals and firms involved. In this assignment you
will use a real case study of a build that took place on the London Road Campus of the University. The
case study is of a temporary structure erected by the Architecture department and built by the
students under the supervision of a suitable qualified contractor. You will act as a consultant for that
contractor. This brief sets out the requirements for
your report. The case study structure was erected on the London Road Campus by the Architecture students who
were challenged to build an outside ‘urban room’ in 2019. The completed construction, a wooden
pavilion, is show in Figure 1 below.
In the assessment section of Blackboard there is a folder titled ‘Engineering Case Study’. This folder
contains further information about the build. As a group you should review this thoroughly. The
information includes a site plan and design drawings.
The University has erected site boundary fencing and will supply services (electricity) as shown on
the site plan. No heavy machinery or plant equipment can be brought onto site.
We will spend the second lecture discussing the case study in class.
Assignment
You have been asked to produce a report for the contractor supervising this build. You report should
include the following:
 An introduction to the report which should include what is being built, where and how.
 A summary of the hazards on site along with any areas of concern.
 An overview of the approach to managing the safety on site.
 At least two detailed examples of Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS)
A template RAMS form is given in the case study folder for you to use or modify as you see fit. You
are free to develop your own or use a different template as you see fit.
HINTS: It is not possible to risk assess a site activity until you fully understand the method. In your
groups you must develop the method in order to be able to assess it (RAMS should really by called
MSRA!).
