I. Social Worker roles regarding medication: What NOT to do.
-Counselors do not recommend specific medications to clients (may advocate with prescribing professionals or advise a medication evaluation)
-Counselors do not discuss clearly medical questions (refer to prescribing professional)
-Counselors do not handle (physically) medication (discuss exceptions).
II. Social Worker roles regarding medication: What we CAN do:
-Education
-Being an integral information broker
-Cultivating relationships with prescribing professionals
-Clinical judgment on severity of psychological distress
-Counseling to resolve intrapsychic conflicts related to medication
-Counselor seek supervision to discern appropriately on medication issues.
-Co-monitoring possible side effects
-Monitoring compliance
