Your task for this assignment is to choose a work of Chicana/o/e/x or Latina/o/e/x cultural production—visual art, a film, a television or streaming series, or popular music—and analyze it using the same methodology Rodríguez employs in Next of Kin. This means that you will use the tools of cultural studies, namely, drawing upon relevant research to support your own critical analysis, to make an argument about the representation of la familia and its gender dynamics in the work you examine. The argument you make can be about the work’s representation of gender roles, femininity, masculinity, motherhood, fatherhood, sexuality, and/or queer/trans characters; or your argument can be about anything else related to the family and gender issues.
For example, if you were to choose to examine the representation of la familia in the classic Chicano film La Bamba, you would find peer-reviewed articles on the film and quote from them to support your own analysis of the film. With your own critical analysis and the scholarly research, you could argue that La Bamba represents la familia, particularly Ritchie’s relationship with his half-brother, as a space for preserving Chicano masculinity in Ritchie Valens’s life.
The research requirement for this assignment is to find and quote from three (3) relevant peer-reviewed/scholarly articles that support your argument about the work you analyze. Generally, the most useful articles are those written on the work (such as articles on La Bamba if you’re examining that film); however, there are other cultural studies articles not written directly on the work that can be useful. To find peer-reviewed/scholarly articles, go to the CSUDH library home page and type in the search bar. The best way to start your search is to type the title of the film or television series and the name of the director. If you choose to write on popular music, type the name of the artist and the title of the song(s) that you want to analyze. Once you do this, there will be a menu on the left titled “Refine my results.” Check the box for “Peer-reviewed/scholarly” and then “Apply Filters.” The results will yield articles or monographs written by academics and published by academic presses.
