On July 9, 1941, the Government Code & Cypher School (GC&CS) at Bletchley Park cracked Germany’s Enigma system, allowing the British to decode secret communications regarding Nazi operations on the Eastern Front, which ultimately helped the Allies to win World War II. In 2014, this achievement was represented in two different narrative forms: (1) the museum exhibits at the newly restored Bletchley Park site and (2) Morten Tyldum’s film, The Imitation Game. How do these two accounts of the same achievement differ and for what purpose?
To answer this question, you’ll need to apply several skills you’ve practiced in your CGS courses including detailed analysis of rhetorical and aesthetic (artistic) choices made to achieve specific effects or purposes and detailed analysis of how specific social and historical contexts inform (shape) those choices.
Notes: Prompt II does not ask you to evaluate whether the museum or the film portrays history more accurately; it asks you to analyze how and why the museum and the film narrate the same achievement in different ways. The Imitation Game is available for viewing on Prof. Sweeting’s HU 104 Blackboard site.
General Requirements (and the basis for your grade):
A clear and well-developed thesis.
References to and analysis of specific exhibits or materials you encounter during the trip.
Include photographs of any exhibits you discuss so professors know what you are writing about.
Bletchley is home to multiple exhibits that demonstrate the extraordinary information and data gathering
effort that took place here during the Second World War. If the Great War of 1914-1918 had already
illustrated the importance of developing frontline military capabilities, Bletchley Park, in contrast,
highlighted the increasingly important role of intelligence operations during times of total war.
Your task is to write an essay that explores and makes an argument about an aspect or implication of the
work that took place there. You should frame your argument around a historically relevant question or
topic engaged and/or demonstrated by the work done at Bletchley.
