Description: Annotated bibliographies are a good way of critically assessing reading through summary and synthesis. Students will be required to select five listed course readings from our syllabus and then locate 5 academic secondary sources that discuss each one critically and analytically. The secondary sources located for each of the five listed readings from the syllabus should offer the student additional understanding and insight regarding the content, themes, and subject-focuses of the selected readings/authors by the student. This means that students should utilize the and other online journal databases such as Jstor and ProjectMuse to construct 5 annotated bibliographic discussions related to their five selected readings from the syllabus. This midterm research assignment will assist students with refining their annotated bibliographic process, which serves as a critical way of assessing reading through various summary and synthesis approaches. This assignment will also be used in the final paper/project for the course.
In sum, students should meet all MLA guidelines for formatting their work and should also locate secondary sources using a theme or direct reference to the author/reading title to develop their annotated paragraphs. Each annotated paragraph should provide a brief summary of the source, an assessment of its argument/analysis, and should identify connections to each reading based on its historical, cultural, and interpretive context. The final sentence in each annotated paragraph should specifically state how each source could be used to further elaborate on the African American author and reading selected in the Final Black Anthology Paper Project.
