Album Analysis: Old School – Golden Era
Students will complete a project in which they have thoroughly examined the music of one Hip Hop album released between 1979-1993. Closely examine and discuss the lyrics and music, interpreting the messages and meaning of at least 2 specific songs. There should be great attention and detail placed on the discussion of musical elements and connections to class themes. Consider the socioeconomic, political, cultural and historical landscapes, examining both the music’s importance within that time period as well as its present day legacy. Papers should be 5 full pages, 12-point font, Times New Roman, 1-inch margins.
You may NOT use the following artists for the paper: Public Enemy, N.W.A. Queen Latifah, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Tupac. Try to get outside your comfort zone, don’t ask about Illmatic- that was ’94.
Create a clear thesis to help shape and focus your paper. For example, “Album X represents/reflects/ addresses the socio-political/economic/cultural landscape of [insert time period] in the way it…[X, Y, Z.]” Support your thesis through discussion of the album, and focus on 2 specific songs to analyze. You can mention other songs, but choose two for close analysis.
Cleary identify the context that will frame your discussion. What historical or cultural events and issues are you using to highlight the importance of this album?
You are required to cite any material you use from outside sources, and sources should be used.
Papers should be 5 pages in length. (5 FULL pages)
