RE: Discussion – Week 8
Nurses encounter the daily impact of policies in the healthcare system and struggle to provide the utmost care to all their diverse patients. Therefore the input of nurses while developing health policies regarding patient care is imperative (Wilmington, 2021). We have studied in the past why nurses must play a part in professional nursing organizations to have a say in governmental activity regarding health care. Nurses can enhance healthcare for present and future patients by actively participating in policymaking (Wilmington, 2021).
Registered nurses are involved in policymaking in various ways. Registered nurses work and interact directly with patients; as such, they know the specific needs of the communities they serve. Registered nurses also promote patient advocacy by promoting patient quality care and safety. The registered nurses attend healthcare meetings with other interdisciplinary team members to discuss the patient’s plan of care and to clarify any communication issues to ensure the patient’s charts are complete and accurate. On a national level, registered nurses can become members of the American Nurses Association. The ANA advances the profession by fostering quality nursing practice, advocating for a secure and ethical work environment, and boosting nurses’ health. However, the presence of Clinical Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA), Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPS), clinical nurse Educators (CNE), and Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) with specific nursing specialties have resulted in very few nurses becoming members of ANA(StudyCorgi, 2022). Advanced practice Registered nurses, by specializing in a particular area of nursing, are strategically positioned to render services and policies that will support and benefit different communities they represent. Advanced Practice Registered Nurses(APRNs) are better equipped to advocate the needs of the people; therefore, they must continue to become members of the ANA (StudyCorgi, 2022). Additionally, if you face a unique problem, it might be solved easily due to the many expert nurses in the organization. However, nurses can take solace when issues that affect most people are solved; they were the ones who helped bring about that change.
Another opportunity for advanced nurses to become part of the policymaking process is the “Doctorate of Nursing Practice, ” a more practical doctorate that prepares expert nurses for advanced practice in specialized areas and, research(Nurse.org, 2022). However, suppose someone wishes to pursue this doctorate, in that case, they must start their professional career later in life, which in my perspective, can be compensated for by gaining the most real-world experience while in school. (David E. Vance, 2020)
Additionally, I would like to suggest that efficient education is critical so that all nurses are well informed about their policymaking rights. This can be done by providing formal political training to nurses during their education. Furthermore, providing internships to nurses under the guidance of officials to closely analyze how the policymaking process works on a professional level can also tackle this issue. Presently three nurses are serving in Congress (ANA, 2022) and have been championing many healthcare resolutions, including resolutions supporting the goals and ideals of National nurses’ week to be observed from May 6th through May 12th (H.R 390, 2021).
In my opinion, as we are in the digital age, nurses can advocate for the appropriate policies through social media. With difficulty entering the official policymaking process, social media can help nurses connect with and impact public policy. We can start appealing to the community and enlightening policymaking. In doing so, we will be able to avoid the formalities of following the hierarchy.
In conclusion, I would like to say that starting to impact health policies is a learning process, and we must brace ourselves to understand it through trial.
