Background:
Company XYZ has a marketing department and a market research (MR) department that are, at best, average. The marketing department here typically goes to this MR department, describes what it wants, decides which market research methodology to employ, decides which MR vendors to use, and the MR department executes.
Company XYZ wants to upgrade its MR department and is considering you for a very high-paying job to do that.
You need to both convince Company XYZ that the MR department needs more autonomy and demonstrate that you are credible.
You obtained the interview to begin with because Company XYZ was intrigued by the term “knowledgeable in behavioral economics” on your resume (you were basing yourself on the book, “Thinking, Fast and Slow”)
Answer the question: If you were hired into Company XYZ, what changes would you seek in order to upgrade the market research conducted?
As you are being interviewed, it is important that you show that you are well-read and knowledgeable and thus credible.
As you answer the question, use ample references to concepts from “Thinking, Fast and Slow.” You are trying to demonstrate to your interviewer depth and breadth of knowledge derived from the book, not just salient facts from the book.
You can assume that both the marketing and market research departments are unfamiliar with behavioral economics.
