Write a 5–7-page research paper detailing the lives and accomplishments of your chosen historical jazz figure.
Your paper must include…
– Biographical Information for your chosen musician.
o
Need-to-Knows: Where are they from? How did they get their start? Personal life? etc.
– Major Accomplishments and why they’re important.
For example, Louis Armstrong’s departure from King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band is
important because it signals his move from sideman to front man, and eventually
household name.
Discussion/Analysis of 3-5 Recordings/Videos
o Ideally from different moments in their career.
▪
For example, Louis Armstrong’s KOCJB recordings, Hot 5 studio band recordings,
and Jack Teagarden recordings.
Use musical vocabulary/concepts – Get specific!
Include names of musicians on recordings and historical context when
appropriate
▪ “In the Modern Jazz Quartet’s recording of ‘Vendome’, the backbeat given by
drummer Kenny Clarke provides a clear reference to…” – Personal Reflection
Likes/dislikes about the artist? Would you listen to them again? Has this artist and their work affected how you look at jazz/music in general? etc.
– Works Cited page (does not count towards page count)
o Include YouTube links to songs discussed in paper

better/more interesting info!
Reminders:
• Must be written using complete sentences with correct grammar/punctuation/spelling. If you have trouble with these.
• Be sure to use concepts/vocabulary words correctly. I recommend reviewing your notes, listening to examples from class, and/or further researching the definitions online.
Use Calibri or Times New Roman font, size 11-12.
When abbreviating an artist’s name, use their last name.
For example, if your paper is on Sarah Vaughan, you would refer to her as ‘Vaughan’ for short.
