A couple of examples of movies: Deep Impact, Armageddon, Volcano, Geostorm, Twister, etc.
Rules!!
1) Needs to be a mainstream science or disaster Hollywood-ish movie – no “B movies” – can’t use Godzilla or Sharknado or anything like that.
2) Needs to be natural science movie and not a science fiction or fantasy movie – can’t use twilight or Matrix or anything like that.
3) Needs to have something we talked about in class – like an earthquake, volcano, landslide, tsunami, or solar system objects
Acceptable comments about movies:
Watching Armageddon and they fly to space in 2 shuttles. When they get near the space station, the 2 shuttles arc toward the station like airplanes. There is little atmosphere up there and the wings on the shuttle are for show, so really they would need some kind of compressed air to change direction or speed.
Watching Twister and the 2 heroes near the end tie themselves to a water pipe as a tornado splinters the shed they are in and somehow they end up with very minor scratches. This injury seems small compared to the debris in the air. Also, there are scenes of slow moving cows in the air? The air speed needed to lift a cow would need to be very high.
Watching Volcano and they turn water hoses on the lava to stop it? The amount of water needed to cool lava would be tremendous! Lava flows into the sea and keeps going. Also, not aware of how lava would be able to make a turn through the lobby of a building and the steel building withstanding the heat. Steel melts at 2500 degree F and lava flows at about 2100 degrees F. While it technically may not turn the steel into liquid quickly, it would definitely cause strain and compromise the building.
Unacceptable comments about movies:
Watching twilight and i don’t get that vampires would be sparkly. (issue – not the right topic)
Watching Geostorm and holy cow is anything accurate in this movie? (issue – not specific enough)
Watching the Martian and I don’t get why Matt Damon needs to be rescued so often in movies. (issue – this is true, but does not deal directly with a physical process we covered in class)
Watching Resident Evil and the virus wouldn’t spread like that. (issue – sci-fi and difficulty to prove or dispute concepts or fictionalized plots)
How to write 1000 words: Describe the movie and general plot of the film. Tell me what is going on when the event happens. Describe the event and what is right or wrong about it. Describe the process the way it should work or how the movie could portray it more realistically.
