Diversity within children’s literature is an emerging field of study. That said, experts often disagree as to what qualifies as “diverse children’s literature” and how we should evaluate diverse children’s literature. Select a book to read that is reflective of diverse children’s literature. Using the criteria from the textbook and your readings for this week, evaluate that book for its depiction of diversity. Rather than focusing on just the surface elements of diversity, truly delve into whether the depiction of diversity is accurate and authentic, whether it stereotypes, or if it has themes worthy to bring into the classroom. For your forum post, introduce your classmates to the book, discussing main characters, plot, themes, and and setting. Then, discuss how it meets (or doesn’t meet) the criteria for quality diverse children’s literature. Include specific details from the book that supports your ideas. Be sure to address the issues of stereotypes, accuracy, authenticity, and worthiness.
