Questions you should address in the essay are:

you are required to analyse three examples of media coverage of health issues.
You will locate three examples of media presentation of health issues. Media sources can be news
(e.g. newspapers, radio, current affairs show) or popular culture (e.g. TV shows, movies, Internet
memes, social media).
• You will critically examine how each health issue is portrayed and how this may affect an
individual’s understanding of the issue, its relevance and how it might best be addressed.
• In analysing the issue, you will need to draw on theories presented in Weeks 1-5 (inclusive).
Your essay should be no longer than 1500 words and the material on which you are
commenting should be attached as appendices.
Questions you should address in the essay are:
• How is the issue presented and why do you believe it is presented in this way?
• What assumptions appear to underpin the messages presented via the media account?
• How does the presentation of the issue attempt to shape the audience’s understanding of the
issue?
• How do sociological theories help to make sense of what is presented and the manner of its
presentation?
