COURSE SUBJECT MATTER: “This course provides students with an opportunity to engage in critical dialogue and to explore personal and societal assumptions about substance abuse. You will be encouraged to develop an informed perspective on addictions. The theories from which we operate determine how we perceive problems, the types of interventions we establish, and the policies that shape our organizations. While effective for some people under some circumstances, for others marginalization or disempowerment can result. Addictions is a broad field. While this course will focus on substance abuse, much of what you will learn will aid you in the development a knowledge-base regarding other forms of addictions. Society typically wants to demonize drugs and the individuals who get caught up into the ‘cycle of addiction’. In our desire to understand ‘addiction’ and put it into a neat box, it is easy to point to the substance and the substance user as the problem. Throughout this course you will be challenged to consider how culture, social structures, political, and economic environments shape our attitudes and approaches to addictions services.”
