This paper is about you and self-reflection, which is critical in the field of social work. Share only as much personal information and experiences as you are comfortable sharing. Using the resource titled “Reflection Paper Material Values and Attitudes Activity” posted, answer the items below, discussing the items you rated high (4-5). In this activity, you will rate various scenarios 1-5, 5 being a situation you would have difficulty working based on YOUR values, beliefs, etc. (not because it would not interest you or because you wouldn’t know what to do). Apply these to question # 3 below and assume that you would not have a choice about working with this client.
Use the NASW Code of Ethics, as a reference (so you WILL have a reference page), looking at the Core Values of Social Work and answer the questions below as a guide for your paper. There are no “right” or “wrong” responses, just your beliefs and being in touch with your feelings. It will be graded on quality of writing and whether or not you followed/completed the assignment instructions.
Reflect and respond to the following:
1. How are your personal values congruent with the 6 core values of the social work profession? You should be able to tell me what the 6 core values are. You don’t have to compare your values to every one of the social work value, but do give specifics and examples. (5 points)
2. How might some of your values conflict with your ethical responsibility to adopt social work’s professional values? (5 points)
3. What will you do (behaviors/tasks) to resolve the conflict between your personal and professional values in order to practice competently and ethically according to the standards of the profession? Include the feelings that you experienced when thinking about some of these possible scenarios. This is also where you will explore the worksheet that you completed. (5 points)
Quality of writing (grammar/spelling) and APA 7 th edition and inclusion of a reference list with correct in-text citations (may lose up to 3 points)
**Personal Values and Attitudes Activity**
This exercise will assist when writing the Personal Values paper. Rate the client examples from the most comfortable to the least comfortable for you to work with:
1– most comfortable to 5– least comfortable.
Then, in a few brief words indicate why you rated the example this way. For those clients you might feel unable to help
what would you do?
This is not about expertise or whether or not you know about or are interested in this particular population, but about
YOUR values and beliefs and how they may differ from potential clients. Therefore, for example, do not give a 5 to a
scenario related to a child simply because you are not interested in working with children.
