Instructions:
This assignment has three parts: Part I Understanding Your Community; Part II Community Assessment; and Part III Community Action Plan.
Part I: Understanding your Community
To begin your understanding of your community, use the concepts (e.g. competition, centralization, concentration, gentrification, stratification and etc.) and identify community theories, as identified in the textbook, to best describe and analyze your community as it was 20 years ago and how it is today.
· Gather facts and statistics to describe your community. For example: How many people live in the city and/or in the town? What were/are their cultural/racial characteristics? What were/ are their incomes, ages, political affiliations, and etc.?
· Analyze the implications of the changes in the community. Give special attention to how these changes may have impacted diverse populations and populations-at-risk.
· Assess the current nature of interactions among different racial and economic population groups. How are these interactions impacting the community’s relationships with other communities?
Part II: Community Assessment
· Describe a problem that the community is currently experiencing. Assess the duration, intensity, and frequency of the problem. Discuss the probable etiology of the problem; your opinion, but supported with literature.
· Identify and discuss the key elements and characteristics of the community that make it vulnerable to this problem.
· Identify and discuss the key strengths of the community that give the community resilience and the potential for overcoming the problem.
· Identify major institutions – schools, factories, churches, attraction sites. How are these institutions contributing to or inhibiting the community’s ability to address the problem?
· Who is most affected by the problem? Provide demographic information regarding the population e.g. race, gender, age, socio economic status.
· Identify and interview at least three lay leaders in the community to determine if they are in agreement with your assessment of the problem. Discuss their perceptions of the problem.
Part III: Community Action Plan
· What would be your proposed plan for change? Identify and develop an action plan to address the identified problem.
· Select strategies and tactics: Which strategy would you use to bring about change? Would you need multiple strategies, if so which strategy would be used for each target?
· Address public images and relationships. For example, who shall be involved in promoting the proposed change? How would they be perceived by decision makers? Who can serve as effective spokespersons for the proposed change? Who should keep a low profile when the proposed change is presented to decision makers
· Assess resource considerations: What resources are needed and available to implement the change? What are the anticipated costs for the proposed change? What must be estimated? What sources of financial support or-in-kind donations should be approached?
· Determine the cost of doing nothing: What would this problem cost the community if nothing is done? How can the cost be framed to be persuasive to decision makers as a good investment to support the proposed change?
· Weigh the likelihood for success: How will opponents of the change effort frame their opposition? What conflict or contention would you expect? Who would support the proposed change? What facts and perspectives gleaned from your analysis of the problem and population would support the proposed change? What facts and perspectives would not support the proposed change?
· What are the ethical dilemmas inherent in the strategy?
