After attending a session on web scraping at the 2016 NICAR conference, Sophie Chou wrote an enlightening piece (Links to an external site.) on the technical (and ethical) challenges surrounding web scraping.

This individual assignment has four components:
Describe a situation in which scraping data from the web may be justified.
Illustrate this situation with a specific example.
You are not expected to draw a decision tree diagram as shown above.
Discuss at least two risks associated with scraping data in this situation.
Describe steps an analyst could take to mitigate those risks.
